 ST THOMAS CHURCH, FOXLEY
The lovely arrangements of traditional greenery and flowers were bathed in gentle candlelight for our Carol Service held on 15th December. With John Fletcher at the organ and Rev'd Tom Candeland leading we listened to the wonderful story of Christ's arrival in this world and joined heartily in the carols. Afterwards everyone chatted amicably over hot drinks and home made biscuits and cake.
Late on Christmas Eve a goodly number filled the calm intimacy of the Chancel for midnight Communion, again with the Rev'd Tom. It was good to enjoy the company of fellow Christians at this moment of solemnity and promise before the earthly pleasures of the season took over.
The combined collections of these services were augmented by the PCC and £300 each sent to East Anglia Children’s Hospices and to Christian Aid to help alleviate the suffering of President Mugabe's most tragic victims in Zimbabwe, the former employees of the dispossessed white farmers.
In a transmission error for the last issue of the Reeves Tale a paragraph was omitted in which John Harvey (Church-warden) and the PCC had paid tribute to the sterling work in the churchyard of Ray Lyon, who had retired due to ill health. Also, to Richard Johnson, who had taken over the job with commitment and enthusiasm, for which we were all most grateful.

The Children’s Society
The Annual Box Opening Coffee Morning was held at Foxley Lodge on 4th December. In the usual generous and good-hearted way £239-59 was raised from a modest gathering and sent off to boost the Society's funds. The little collecting boxes, which about forty people keep in their homes, contained a very creditable £674-59, which was the best ever !  Having one of the little boxes by you, to pop in any spare change, or perhaps a regular gift each week, is such a painless way to help a truly wonderful charity. The plight of so many defenceless children in our present un-stable and rootless society is heartbreaking and bodes ill for our country's future; not to speak of the damaged, tortured lives of the victims. If you would like a box please let me know.
I might also mention that another- and equally painless- way to help us, is to donate your unwanted goods for sale in our shops. Some things are problematical (e.gelectrical) for safety reasons, but we will consider almost anything that is clean and in good order. Again, do contact me. Thank you to all who have brought things along over the past year.
Finally, there was a Christingle Service at Lyng Church on Christmas Eve which contributed a very satisfactory £60 to Childrens' Society funds. Well done!
The final total raised in 2002 for the Benefice was £974-18. Thank you to all who gave and helped during the year and let's look forward to being well over the thousand pound barrier in 2003 !
