ALL SAINTS CHURCH BAWDESWELL

It has been a quiet month for  the church.  We cancelled our Words & Praise evening service on 8th June as we wanted to take part in the Deanery Pentecost Praise at Salle church.  This was excellent.
Salle church is huge and light and airy, and to fill it with people and sing cheerful modern hymns was an experience to enjoy.
The Hog Roast which followed had to be held in the Memorial Hall as there was an heavy downpour.  However, it was a friendly affair and one got to make new acquaintances from North Elmham to Lenwade and Reepham and Lyng, to mention just a few.

We had the funeral for John Clarke, who is remembered elsewhere in this magazine.  It was attended by about 70 friends and relatives including a wide representation from this village.  He was laid to rest afterwards in the churchyard extension.  A sad occasion for us all.

The church flower rota has just started up again, after a Spring of special displays for the wedding, Easter, our Jubilee and the recent funeral, etc.
We are really most fortunate to have so many kind and talented volunteers, led by Sue Lilwall, who keep our church beautifully decorated throughout the Summer months.  Our grateful thanks to them all, and to Beryll Pratt who voluntarily takes charge of the general cleaning of the church.

We are grateful too to The Friends Of Bawdeswell Church and the support they are giving us by running most of the fundraising events for us – this in a most energetic way.  The events so far have been very enjoyable for everyone taking part, and they leave one really looking forward to future Friends’ events.

There is to be a non-fundraising  Friends’ Coffee Morning in the church on Saturday 5th July at 10.30am.  The last one proved very popular.  Please do come along.

Our newly appointed architect, Mr.Nick Warns, recently conducted the Church’s five yearly survey. We awaited his report with trepidation, but have instead been pleasantly surprised, since Mr.Warns is so complimentary about the great historical value of St.Thomas’ and approaches the problems of the church building and it’s contents from a different angle to his predecessors.
He states that “the main fabric of the building is in good order” and advises a sensible regime of maintenance to keep it that way. What does worry him (and all of us) is the damp, the electrical system, the damp inducing gas heaters, the fragile state of the furniture and fittings – “ the forgotten glories of this church, but in a terrible state”. Fortunately, he is optimistic about specialist advice and grants in this respect. He also suggests the renovation of our precious peel of six bells. Very few small churches can boast as many as six bells and we should be proud of them.
In all, Mr.Warns’ report formulates a workable and practicable scheme to “ put the Zing back into Foxley Church” (as he put it) and add that well-cared-for feeling to it’s existing serenity and sense of peace.

Garden Open Day at Church View, Foxley

Peter and Pam Egmore were so disappointed that, due to another event, they were unable to invite us to visit their lovely garden on June 8th, that they are planning their own “Open Day” on August 3rd. From 11 am until 5 pm we shall be able to admire the garden, the major part of which has been developed since 1997 and includes over 400 trees of varying species, a summerhouse and a pond feature. There will be coffee and tea and refreshments available and some interesting stalls. Proceeds will be divided between Foxley Church, which forms a wonderful backdrop to the garden, and the Village Hall.
