THE BECK W.I.
Fifteen members were present at our May meeting.  Aleathia took a vote on the Annual Accounts before reading the 3 Resolutions.  Needless to say, the voting was unanimous in favour of Care of Older People!  - but voting was mixed on the other 2 Resolutions:- Vocational Training and Children’s Diets, Exercise & Health.  We hope that next month we will hear the considered verdicts.
After the tea/coffee interval, members enjoyed a somewhat noisy but entertaining game of Beetle.
Flower posies were given to members with birthdays in May and the raffle was won by Carol.  There was no exhibition, but next month when we are to be treated to “A Summer Flower Arrangement” by Jo of Busy Lizzies, the exhibition will be a Flower Arrangement in a wine glass.  The date will be Monday 9th June; Venue as usual, Old School Room, Sparham; Time 7.30pm.  New members always welcome.

A TIME OF CHANGE AT ELMHAM SURGERY

The Elmham Surgery Patient Participation group is now in its third year. Members attending an end-of-the-year meeting in Elmham School heard a report on the business of promoting patients’ viewpoints at a time of rapidly increasing change at the surgery.
Key developments had taken place in two areas of concern for patients. Efforts to shorten waiting-times to see a doctor had been carried forward with the appointment of a nurse practitioner and the extension of the locum service to cover night calls during the week and after midday on Saturdays. Then, at the start of 2003, there was the launching of a pilot scheme to deliver repeat prescriptions to people over 60 in a group of outlying villages. The doctors say there are signs already that this has had some effect in cutting down the queues at the surgery’s dispensary.
Another part of the effort to tackle the queues is the planned extension of the building itself. An important feature of this will be a much bigger dispensary. There will be, in fact, extra rooms on two floors, complete with a lift for patient access. Some of the extra space will be used by a mental health team plus, perhaps, a dental clinic.
The plans are on show in the surgery. One difficulty that everyone is aware of is that the building work will make life very awkward for the people who come to the surgery by car.
The Participation Group’s next meeting will be on Wednesday, June 11 at 7.30pm in Elmham School. If there’s any matter you would like to raise, contact Alan MacKim ( 668831), Ann Adeney    ( 683380) or Isabel Fowler ( 668909).
