BAWDESWELL BOOK CLUB

Held in the Old Workhouse Bar on the 1st Thursday of the month at 7. 30.

One of the book choices for the November meeting was -- " The Shell Seekers " Rosamunde Pilcher

It is reviewed here by Kay Gordon
The story is set in the 1980’s and revolves around Penelope who, having suffered a heart attack at 63, reflects upon her past and considers her future.
When a painting by Penelope’s father, the Pre Raphaelite artist Lawrence Stern, is sold for ‘a small fortune’ her three grown up children focus their attention on the value of a similar work in Penelope’s possession, her beloved painting “The Shell Seekers”. Penelope’s idea of the true “value” of the work differs greatly from the financial gain her children seek and consequently family loyalties are tested.
We chose this book as it is featured in the BBC’s 100 best reads but, unlike other novels we have read, it promoted little discussion. The general feeling was that it was quick and easy to read and would be fine for holiday reading on a beach somewhere.
