BROADBAND
In response to the
letter on page 2 ……
The benefits of having Broadband
include the ability to do more than one thing at a time, i.e. use your
phone independently of the computer without the need for a separate line,
download video and music from the internet and send e-mails at the same
time. Film trailers , some Sport and BBC output are currently available
online Broadband. You might say you are happy with the way
you receive your television now, thank you. More will come. It is
only a matter of time before the world’s tv stations will be available
on the Internet to those who have Broadband.
Broadband can also
be used by more than one computer at a time. The connection is permanently
there and typically ten times faster than your present connection.
What’s more it is at a fixed monthly cost with no additional call charges.
This will make a lot of difference for the sort of computer traffic that
businesses need to transmit, or for families where youngsters are never
off-line.
If you previously registered
to support Dereham’s case, they have reached their goal and now have Broadband.
Although we are a branch of Dereham exchange we apparently need to
register separately.
So even if you are personally
not interested in upgrading to Broadband, help your neighbourhood families
and local businesses by visiting the website of your Internet Service
Provider( Freeserve, OneTel, AOL or whoever) and register your interest.
BT does not ask us to make
any commitment to sign-up for Broadband, just to register an interest in
it.
WORM VIRUS
If your computer is running
Windows XP and keeps inexplicably shutting down, it could be infected by
a virus called Blaster Worm or one of its variants. If you
have any suspicions whatsoever, go to www.bawdeswell.net and put the words
Blaster Worm in any of the search boxes to get help.

The Rev. David Head officiated
at his first Carol Service here with us in Foxley on 21st. December. John
Fletcher was at the organ and we were surrounded, as usual, by excellent
festive decorations and tree. We enjoyed a return to the traditional words
of the “old” Bible and familiar carols, plus two interesting modern poems.
Afterwards, as the weather had turned chilly, we became very jolly and
chatted amicably over glasses of mulled wine and mincepies. Our Christmas
Morning service of Holy
Communion was celebrated by Rev. Michael Baker, who amused the children
with a card trick, which revealed Jesus Christ as the King of Hearts. What
a joy it was to have them with us! The total of the Collections at the
two services, amounting to £351-30, divided equally and sent to the
Children’s
Society and Hope and Homes
for Children.

THE CHILDREN'S
SOCIETY
The Annual Coffee Morning
was held at Foxley Lodge on 26th. November and £218.00 was sent off
to H.Q., plus £597.00 from the boxes.May I make my usual request?
These little boxes are a very low-key, but effective, means of raising
much-needed money for an excellent charity. “Every little helps”! I can
set you up with a box, if you would like one, and then you can pop in any
spare change you may happen to have, or a regular coin or two. Please contact
me. I also collect “unwanted goods” of most descriptions, except electrical,
for our shop. I would like to thank all those who have deposited an amazing
mix of things in our carport over the year. The Society is so grateful for
all the support it receives from the parishes throughout the country, which,
in no small way, help to fund its projects with disadvantaged children
and teenagers. It is heartbreaking to know how many there are whose lives
and well -being are threatened by so many evils – abuse, drugs, poverty,
often sheer cruelty or neglect. The total raised for the Society in our
benefice in 2003 was £l,ll6.62p. This sum includes Foxley Church’s
donation of half its Christmas Collections. So we managed to break the
£1000 barrier once more! Well done to us all! I’m looking forward
to even more progress in 2004, with your help.
