                                  HAPPY READING !

Book Review: The Star of the Sea by Joseph O’Connor

The ‘Star of the Sea’ sets sail in the Winter of 1847 on its final voyage from Liverpool to New York. On board its passengers are fleeing famine, injustice and mass evictions in Ireland.  Among them are Lord Merredith and his family, Grantley Dixon, an aspiring novelist (and Merredith’s wife’s lover), Mary Duane, the children’s nanny, and Merredith’s childhood sweetheart, and Pius Mulvey, a murderer.  The connections between these characters and their shared past forms the basis of the novel.

The story is told from a number of different perspectives with extracts from the captain’s log, letters, newspaper clippings and illustrations, which give good insights and a feel for the period.

This novel has received a lot of coverage in the press recently and has had some excellent reviews so I was really looking forward to reading it. The story was absorbing at times and I felt it brought home the terrible plight of the steerage passengers and the effects of the famine.  However, for me it never really lived up to its reputation as an ‘epic novel’ or ‘a page-turner’. I felt little sympathy or liking for the main characters, found the story line a little depressing and the plot sometimes confusing and lacking in credibility.

ATTENDING TO THE FACT
A collection of poems by David Head, our Rector, and Hilary Elfick has just been published under the title Attending to the Fact – Staying with Dying.
It is a very moving and thought-provoking work, showing the reader the human side of care.
The poems explore what it is like to care for the dying and the dead, drawing on the authors’ own experiences in hospices.  They range from the savage to the sad, to the sublime.  The centrality of the human spirit shines through.
It is an unusual source of experience and insight  for those working with the seriously ill, and also for their patients and all of us who have been touched by grief.  For the rest the poems make thoughtful reading and perhaps help you put your own life into perspective.
Attending to the Fact – Staying with Dying is published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers at  £9.95.
It can be obtained from the SPCK Bookshop in Norwich, direct from the publishers website at www.jkp.com .  and I am sure you will be able to get a signed copy from the Rector himself.      RT
