BECK WI

Aleathia opened our October meeting by welcoming Jennifer, a prospective new member. She then introduced our speaker, Simon Partridge, who had our undivided attention for the next three quarters of an hour as he shared with us his keen interest in, and intimate knowledge of the Broads and their surroundings.

The slides he showed us included rare plants in their natural habitat, birds - including bullfinch, oyster catcher and marsh harrier; duck, deer, wild flowers and colourful butterflies. Some memorable shots too, of reed beds and clear waterways which are such a feature of the Broads.

After a break for refreshments Ruth read last month's Minutes and she and Aleathia spoke of forthcoming events.

The single stem flower exhibit was won by Ruth Clarke, 2nd Ruth Whitmore. the raffle was won by Mary Humphrey.

Our next meeting is on 8th November in the Old School Room at 7.30 p.m. We look forward to seeing you all. New members always welcome.

Mary Humphrey

FOXLEY PCC

The PCC met at Foxley Lodge on 29th.September. Amongst matters discussed was the considerable rise in Foxley’s contribution to the Diocese of Norwich’s finances, used mainly for paying the clergy and their pensions. The Treasurer explained the new formula. This extra drain on our finances will come at a time when we shall have to pay for the repairs to the pews, screen and door and the new electrical installation. More expense will arise soon in complying with the Disability Discrimination Act, which came into force on the 1St.October. Many of its recommendations are inapplicable or impracticable in our ancient building. In fact, on the occasions when disabled people come to services, often when staying at Moor Farm, they cope perfectly well with a little help. We do hope to install a ramp inside the main door and conveniently, a local resident visiting in his wheelchair, helped us to work out the best position for it.
Members were cheered by news of recent donations, notably from a family researching its forbears thought to have been prominent in Foxley in mediaeval times, called, perhaps unsurprisingly “de Foxle”. Looking into one’s ancestry is popular and we have spent time lately responding to requests for information from families who have former links with the village.
Harvest Festival was held on 10th.October, taken by the Rector. There was a splendid array of flowers and harvest gifts and former churchwarden Mrs.N.L.Garrod presented a silver salver on which to receive the collections when they are presented at the Altar.
On Wednesday 2nd.November, All Souls Day, 7.30pm, there will be a Service of Holy Communion to commemorate the departed.
