The BECK WI
Ruth opened our July meeting by reading last month's minutes and then mentioned several forthcoming events listed on her What's On.
Our guest speaker, Mrs Phillipa Lond, was then introduced and we were shown the selection of hats she had brought with her. Yes! The subject of her talk was HATS. She impressed us all with her enthusiasm for hats - choosing materials for them, making them and very importantly, wearing them. Her slides showed various stages of making a hat, from measuring the head, cutting the materials, use of hat blocks, pinning, stitching and finally the finished hat, worn of course at the correct angle!
The exhibit, which naturally enough, was a hat, was won by Ruth Clarke, 2nd Mary Humphrey. The raffle was won by Trish, one of our very newest members.
The evening ended with June confirming that this was her last meeting as she prepares to leave her little cottage in Themelthorpe to live in Spain. We will all miss her gay company and together with thanks for her 2-year Presidency, all members sent her on her way with the best of good wishes.
No meeting in August as we visit the Seaside Special on Cromer Pier.
The speaker's subject on 8th September is "Keeping on your Feet" and our exhibit is Homemade Biscuits. So we hope to see you at the September meeting in Sparham's Old School Room, and new members are always welcome.

BOOK CLUB
Held in the Old Workhouse Bar on the first Thursday of each month at
7.30. i.e. the 7th of August and the 4th of September.

  Our book choices for the August meeting are;

                "The Future Homemakers of America" by Laurie Graham
                "Snow Falling on Cedars" by David Guterson.

Last month one of our 2 choices was "Perfume" by Patrick Suskind  subtitled "the story of a murderer".
It was originally published in German in 1985 and recently gained a  place in the BBC's top 100 books.
Our readers were divided in their opinions varying from "dreadful" to "the best book they had read".  This lead to a lively discussion and we did agree that it is a very unusual book and comes up with more adjectives for more different types of smells than you might have thought possible.  It is the story of an extremely unpleasant man who has no smell himself but who has a very acute sense of smell and who goes on to commit a series of murders.  It is set in" sweaty fetid eighteenth century Paris" to quote the blurb on the back cover.  I personally enjoyed the opportunity to read something I would probably never have chosen.
