THE BECK WI

Our president welcomed Mr Simon Partridge at our February meeting.

Unfortunately Mr Patrick Maitland was ill and unable to attend as our speaker.  However we had a most informative and interesting talk on the subject “Herring Fishing in Yarmouth” with slides and with humour from Simon.

The herring trade began to decline, we were told, in the late 1950’s but for many years was Yarmouth’s main industry with many, many drifter (boats) going to sea in the evening dragging nets 2 miles long behind each drifter.  Fish was manhandled from the nets into baskets, 7 stone of herring into 1 basket.

Scottish girls came to Yarmouth to work during the season, cleaning and packing the fish in salt and ice into large barrels, to be exported to many countries especially to Russia.

Did you know that the surplus herring after the second World War was the beginning of the humble fish finger?  Birds Eye tried making them using herring but the brown coloured fish was not popular so was replaced with cod and today is a favourite with both children and adults!

We also welcomed a new member, Mary who has recently moved into Sparham village.

The exhibition was won by Reggie, second place, Faith.  We also brought bulbs, planted last year to be judged too.  First, Margaret Pointer.   Second, Alethia.  Well done, everyone!

Next month
“Norway and the World’s Most Beautiful Voyage”.  7.30 in the old schoolroom, Sparham.  New members always welcome.
