WENSUM VALLEY BIRDWATCHING SOCIETY

It probably sounds a bit passé to spend an evening at the local village hall watching slides. Maybe it is, but when the slides are of excellent quality and with a speaker to match then Coronation Street comes off a poor second. Breckland farmer and wildlife photographer Chris Knight gave a packed Village hall a fascinating talk on ‘Wildlife on a Breckland Farm’ describing how it is possible to combine modern farming methods with the preservation of wildlife habitat and the environment. He illustrated the talk with slides of the wide variety of wildlife to be found on his farm which included some striking pictures of the elusive Stone Curlew.

Next indoor meeting is 7.30 p.m. on Thursday April 15th  at Lenwade Village Hall  with a presentation by David Pelling entitled, ‘Birding in Exotic places’.
Our next  outdoor meeting is Sunday April 4th  visiting Waxham, Horsey, and Winterton. Meet in Sainsburys car park at Longwater, Costessey at 8.30 a.m. Further info from Ray Gribble Tel. Nor-872709.

Non- members are always welcome, especially if they subsequently become members, to both indoor and field meetings.

Aleathia opened the meeting and Carol read the minutes for February.
Our Speaker, Mr. David Craske, then took over and gave us a most interesting talk. In 1998 he and his wife had visited a Safari Game Reserve in Kenya and thoroughly enjoyed seeing and filming the animals. In addition to that, he had been immensely impressed by the friendliness of the local people when he visited Sambura and went to the local school. The village consisted of about 20 mud huts and the school was very small indeed. The children however, were content with little or no equipment.
Since returning home to Norfolk, David and his wife have been responsible for raising money to send to the village enabling a better school to be built and tables, chairs, pencils, etc. to be obtained. We then saw a video showing those happy children in their natural surroundings.
David judged the Holiday souvenir exhibition. 1st - Janet, 2nd - Daisy. Zillah won the raffle. Next month the exhibit is a decorated Egg,.
The April meeting is on Monday 5th April at 7.30 p.m. in Sparham Old School Room. Hope to see you all -and new members are very welcome.
