Book Review: ‘Life of Pi’ by Yan Martell
This book won the Man Booker Prize in 2002. When I first heard of this book it was not one that I thought would interest me. I am therefore very glad that the Book Club chose it as I think it is one of the best books that I have read. It is a beautifully written story and I had difficulty putting it down.

At the start of the novel we are introduced to Piscine Molitor Patel known to all as Pi. He is a gentleman who has studied religious studies and zoology at university and it is his story that we are to be told.

The story begins with a description of Pi’s childhood in Pondicherry, India. It contains some amusing anecdotes relating to his name, his decision to be a Muslim, a Hindu and a Christian at the same time and life at his father’s zoo.

The main part of the story tells us what happens when, after the tragic sinking of a cargo ship, sixteen year old Pi ends up in a solitary lifeboat bobbing on the wild blue Pacific. His only companions are a hyena, a zebra, a female orang-utan and a 450-pound Royal Bengal tiger. Soon only Pi and Richard Parker (the tiger) remain. The extraordinary tale of how they survive months at sea begins. Just as Pi has day to day existence under control and you begin to relax a Frenchman briefly appears on the scene and a mysterious island inhabited only by meerkats.

The story is incredible but somehow made plausible. You can almost feel yourself in the boat able to reach out and touch Richard Parker’s fur. It is a most original story.
