A Review
of one of last month’s books -
Big Stone Gap by
Adriana Triagiani
A romantic story set in
Virginia in the late 1970s and focusing on the central character Ave Maria
Mulligan. Ave Maria owns and runs the local pharmacy, is involved in the
amateur dramatic society and has a colourful circle of friends. Through
these activities and her acquaintances we are introduced to the characters
that populate Big Stone Gap. As the story develops we learn of Ave Maria’s
life, loves, complicated origins, uncertainties, hopes and beliefs presented
in a readable way and reflecting the rhythms of small town life in this
place amongst coalfields and mountains.
This is a feel good story
- the first of a trilogy - bittersweet in part and flavoured with a hint
of ‘true story’ (Ms Triagiana is clearly writing about a background that
she is very familiar with). However, for this reader, that flavour was
synthetic, over-rich and cloying.
Big Stone Gap would make
an ideal summer holiday read, but don’t ask too much of it - it doesn’t
stand up to close scrutiny.
