LOCAL HERITAGE
GROUP
We had a very interesting
talk on Thursday 14th October about a project pioneered in Norfolk -
C.O.M.M.A. Community Multi-Media Project.
David Barber explained the
project to us – which is to encourage communities to create their own archive
of memories and photographs. He brought along two members of the
team from Spixworth who have been taking part in the scheme for over two
years.
The archive is created on
a laptop computer purchased for the project and with the help of special
software, photos, memories, film clips, newspaper cuttings, interviews
etc. can be collected and stored on the computer for future generations.
CD.s can be made at any time of the archive so far, sold to anyone who
wants one, placed in the local library, and eventually it is hoped to have
all the archives from different communities on the Internet.
The information is gathered
by holding regular sessions for people to drop in with material and by
having stands at local events to show the progress so far and publicise
it.
Norfolk is the first county
in the country to embark on this project and the government is encouraging
other counties to follow.
We are going to look into
the possibility of raising the necessary funding to set up such a group.
We have a good deal of local information collected already on the Reeve’s
Tale website, and in that respect are one step ahead. However, participating
in the C.O.M.M.A. scheme would ensure that our Archive would be saved more
securely for the future.
If anybody is interested
in taking part, please speak to Ailsa on 688191, or Robin on 688268.
We had a meeting on 8th October
with NCC and Highways to outline our aim to plant wind and sound barriers
along the A.1067. More of that another time.
Forthcoming meetings:-
18th November 7.30
– 9.30pm Dr Andrew Macnair will give a talk on his research, based
on map evidence of ancient woodland in the Bawdeswell and Foxley area.
16th December 7.30
– 9.30pm Christmas gathering.
We look forward to seeing
you at The Park, Park Farm, corner of Dereham Road and the A1067.
